In 2017, the Regional Plan Association published the Fourth Regional Plan, a long-range strategic plan for the New York Metropolitan Area. Like RPA’s three previous plans, released in the 1920s, 1960s, and 1990s, the fourth plan was created to help elected officials, policymakers, and advocates plan for the region’s future.

The plan includes a broad vision and specific recommendations to promote equity, health, prosperity, and sustainability for the next generation. It was the product of five years of research and public engagement with a wide range of stakeholders participating in the planning effort—from community members and civic organizations to business groups and public officials.
