TASTEMAKERS is a show about food, but don’t expect to recognize your favorite dish at first glance. Artist and designer Steph Mantis reframes the familiar, encouraging us to question our expectations and associations with food. By slowing things down, Mantis manages to gently coax us into a deeper consideration of what we eat.

Obsessed with making art of the things we overlook — the leftovers, the leavings, the things we throw away — Mantis initially drew inspiration from her family’s pizzeria in Maine. “Forever Pizza” was her first foray into taking food remnants and enforcing permanency by setting pizza into Lucite. With TASTEMAKERS, Mantis continues to experiment with nostalgia and remembrance.

For this exhibition, Mantis learned the stories of several restaurants at the Yard — Brooklyn Roasting Company, Grandchamps, Jalapa Jar, Russ & Daughters, Rustik Tavern, and Transmitter Brewing — exploring their key ingredients through the microscope. The new perspectives challenge and celebrate our relationships with food.
